“Emir” is inspired by true events, most notably the Gulf War, and true characters, like a crown prince who speaks fluent Tagalog and Ilocano.

Better still, the movie illustrates the resilient side of OFWs. “Emir” casts these “new heroes” in a new light, underlining the musicality that has transformed global perception of OFWs. Moreover, the film pays tribute to Filipino caregivers worldwide, about whom it might be said, “The hand that rocks the cradle rules the world.”

Emir’s theme song, “Bakit Ako Naririto” is sung by Frencheska Farr, winner of GMA 7’s talent search, “Are You the Next Big Star?” Farr, who plays Amelia, spent three weeks in Morocco, where most of the movie was filmed. The singer-actress was apparently smitten by Morocco—the same location for such movies as “Gladiator,” “Lawrence of Arabia” and, more recently, “Sex and the City” and “The Prince of Persia.”

Also cast in “Emir” are Sid Lucero, Julia Clarete, Jhong Hilario, Dulce, Bayang Barrios, Bodjie Pascua, Gigi Escalante, Beverly Salviejo, Liesl Batucan, Melanie Dujunco, and Kalila Aguilos.

Lorna Sanchez and Chris Millado are assistant directors; Neil Daza, director of photography; Chino Toledo, musical director (with the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra); Douglas Nierras, choreographer; Digo Ricio, production designer; Jerrold Tarog, editor.

“Emir” features 22 songs composed by Gary Granada, Vin and Ebe Dancel, and Diwa de Leon, with additional lyrics by Rody Vera, and Palanca winner Jerry Gracio, who is also the screenwriter.

"Emir" is produced by the Film Development Council of the Philippines in association with the Cultural Center of the Philippines and Viva Films with the support of the Manila Broadcasting Co. It opens on June 9 at theaters nationwide.
